Akudou Power: 2009 Hantoo Art Group

11 April - 12 May 2009
Press Release

How did the perseverance of tough guys in the past become old-school naivety? This question fascinates me because it reveals something distinctive about their era; Hantoo was built on a foundation of struggle in the arts, and this reflected a certain spirit of the times. The facts are clear: organizing an art group, generating enthusiasm, supporting one another, setting a schedule for annual group exhibitions and generously giving their time to model for one another are difficult to call radical. In the past, they assembled for a revolution, but today it is to continue the sentiment among compatriots. The transformation in Hantoo reminds of something very important: a certain spirit that existed in the 90s cannot avoid becoming a part of our cultural past. This hot-blooded radicalism of yesterday has become the joyful expression of feeling today.

The huge and menacing robot disappeared just like this. One can't be a hero without a number-one enemy, but what difference does it make? This brings me to the most memorable line from 20th Century Boy, “Basic survival is also very important.”
