Frieze New York Online Viewing Room is scheduled to launch amidst the global upheavals caused by COVID-19, while the art world weathers through the pandemic’s shock waves. As one of the landmark international contemporary art events, Frieze Art Fair will inaugurate its first Frieze Viewing Room: Frieze New York Edition with a diverse online program, in collaboration with a league of premier galleries from across the world. These initiatives will couple with an introduction of augmented reality technology and the 24-hour VIP consultation services to facilitate a holistic online viewing experience for the collecting community. For this occasion, Tina Keng Gallery, as the only gallery representing Taiwan, will showcase a stable of contemporary artists of Chinese descent. The five artists, including Zhang Hongtu, Su Xiaobai, Yao Jui-chung, Peng Wei, and Su Meng-Hung, will propose a moment of reflection inspired by classical Chinese philosophy to catalyze an intercultural dialogue distilled from the Asian aesthetics.
Tina Keng Gallery will also take part in the Frieze Charity Viewing Room program with works by Taiwanese artists Yao Jui-chng and Su Meng-Hung to show our solidarity in this time of severe change. The proceeds of the sales will go to independent international humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF). In addition to the online viewing room and charity program, the electronic catalogue of And there’s nothing I can do — Su Xiaobai Solo Exhibition, held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan in 2018 will be showcased by the TKG Foundation for Arts & Culture as a part of the fair’s digital archive initiative The Frieze Library: Volume Two. This partnership between the fair and the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will provide free research access to museum and academic communities across disciplines. This will serve as an ideal platform where our Asian perspectives developed from a long commitment to the presentation of modern and contemporary Chinese art, contribute to the ongoing research and existing art history narratives.
Armed with our experience from the Art Basel Hong Kong Online Viewing Room earlier this year, our participation in the inaugural Frieze Viewing Room: Frieze New York Edition will again seek to advance the digital viewing experience with ways to contextualize artworks and engage a sense of physical presence. To achieve such goal, our presentation will incorporate a dedicated audio-visual tour alongside artist documentaries that allow viewers to perceive the artworks and the art making process in a more personal context. During the virtual showcase, we will echo our digital presentation with a collaborative group show, titled Frieze Viewing Room Online: Back-end, with TKG+ at our Taipei space to delve into our response to the challenges that face spectatorship at art fairs and cultural events due to the pandemic outbreak. The group show aims to raise critical questions related to the viewing technologies and their corresponding integration with the information available at the back-end, presenting an occasion to link the digital showcase at Frieze to our physical space.
