Book Launch: The Quest for Mandala: Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness: Yang Mao-Lin

Tina Keng Gallery 1F 7 April 2019

Tina Keng Gallery is pleased to announce the book launch for The Quest for Mandala: Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness, which takes place on April 7 between 3-5 p.m. A panel discussion joined by independent curator and art critic Hu Yung-Fen, art and film critic Hsu Ming-Han, and Yang Mao-Lin himself will focus on the artist’s recent body of work. The catalogue The Quest for Mandala: Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness draws a comprehensive picture of his creative oeuvre, from his solo exhibition The Quest for Mandala Episode I: Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness (2015) to his latest exhibition Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness II: Somber Seas (2019).

The “Wanderers of the Abyssal Darkness” series is suffused with a profound autobiographical significance. After Yang spent three decades of tackling the issue of nationalism through painting and sculpture, his 2016 retrospective MADE IN TAIWAN at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum symbolizes an end to an era. As the artist deems his social responsibility completed, deeply buried childhood memories now resurface to a hunger and longing unquenched since his youth that propels him to explore the artistic road not taken. Solitary and fantastical, the deep-sea fish swimming freely in the depths of the ocean is a ultimate manifestation of his inner self.

You are cordially invited to join Yang Mao-Lin’s new journey.
